Run, Gorilla, Run!

June 2nd, 2007 · No Comments

This is clearly the best environmentalist fundraiser/publicity stunt in existence. The opportunity to run 4 miles dressed in a gorilla suit alongside hundreds of other, equally clothed individuals and you get to keep the costume and it’s for a good cause all for only a hundred bucks? Heck yes! You can bet if I was anywhere near San Francisco on June 10th I would totally be there.
Let the race begin!

Seriously though, this is really depressing: “The two species, the eastern or mountain gorilla (Gorilla berengei) and the western or lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) and five subspecies are all under threat; with the Virunga mountain gorilla (Gorilla berengei berengei) at fewer than 650. This figure may be as few as 320 if the taxonomy of the Bwindi mountain gorilla is classified as Gorilla berengei bwindii, as some scientists suggest it should be.”

People that know me can attest that I’m not much of an environmentalist. It’s just not my idealist cause-of-choice. But stuff like this definitely concerns me. If some rare form of tree moss goes extinct, I won’t shed any tears, but keep your hands off my damned dirty apes! Seriously, of all the animals to be concerned about preserving, primates are at the top of my list. When King Kong beat the tar out of the dinosaurs in the new movie, I got choked up (not really, but I do have some primate pride.) So run proud, gorilla-suited San Franciscoites! Run proud…
