Tasty Way to Teach Parliamentary Procedure

June 19th, 2007 · 1 Comment

So I have been at a leadership conference in Orange County, California for the last few days and thus unable to post.  I learned a great deal at the workshops I attended, but the one thing I wanted to share was a really neat way to teach parliamentary procedure.  You assemble all the ingredients necessary to make an ice cream sunday and then call the meeting to order.  To combine the ingredients and assemble the dessert, you make the group use the same procedure as during your meetings.  For example:

Person A:  “I move to put three scoops of ice cream in the bowl.”

Person B:  “I second the motion.”

Chair:  “Is there any discussion?”

Person B:  “I move to put three squirts of chocolate sauce on the ice cream.”

Person A:  “I second the motion.

Person C:  “I move to amend the original motion to change the chocolate to caramel.”

And so on…

I’m looking forward to using this delicious exercise at the next Student Government retreat.
