Sex Sells… Etymology?

July 24th, 2007 · 1 Comment

So this is a little bit random. This scantily clad YouTuber is flaunting herself in order to get more attention and more views. However, her videos all relate to word origins or word games. Although she inserts random pictures of bikini-wearing models into her videos, her main focus is etymology. I guess whatever works for her. In this low-cut video, she discusses the origin of the word “sin.” Although there are several theories on the origin of this word, including both Germanic and Latin roots, when scholars translated the Bible out of Greek, the Greek word hamartia was translated to sin which, in Old English, was an archery term meaning “to miss the market.”Anyway, I just thought it was interesting that this woman is using her body to sell ideas totally unrelated to sex. (OK, so sin is a bad example but beyond the obvious implications her explanations are actually quite formal.)
